INED's research projects are organized into around thirty multi-year "key projects" which mobilize the majority of its human and financial resources. Each key project is headed by a research unit, though may include researchers from several units, and involves one or more outside partners, either from France or abroad.

A number of "individual projects" are also conducted by INED researchers outside the scope of the key projects. They are generally emerging or experimental research initiatives or one-off projects under short-term contracts.
