Can ethnic statistics be collected in France?

“Migrations and minorities in France today” was the subject of INED’s “Rencontres de la Démo” mini-conference of 15 December 2016.
Citing several examples, François Héran clarifies that current French law does allow researchers to conduct studies that focus on or take into account the geographic and/or national origin of immigrants and their descendants. He discusses the debate on “ethnic statistics”, explaining why and how researchers use them in scientific studies.
