TIES RTN

Research Training Network on Integration of the Second Generation

This RTN, coordinated by Patrick Simon, INED, will develop a framework of European level training on migration and ethnic studies. The originality of the RTN is to be built on an European comparative survey -the TIES survey - that investigates processes of integration in 15 cities in eight countries (Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland). Fourteen young researchers will be involved in an ambitious research project and will be trained by-doing from October 2006 to September 2010. The TIES survey will tackle the broad issue of integration by looking more specifically at the second generation - the children born of immigrant parentage. The acquired position of the second generation -here the Turkish, Moroccan, Greek and ex-Yugoslavian second generation (18-35) and a native age group-, in the domains of education, labour market, housing, identity, social relations, family formation, transnationalism, religion, will be analysed through an international standardized survey. The interdisciplinary research team that composes the RTN aims to provide a truly international training experience for the ESRs and ERs. They will work in an international team on a European project making use of a unique international data set on the second generation gathered by some of the leading European institutes on migration and ethnic studies. The RTN will offer wide training activities in close cooperation with the training committee of IMISCOE.
