INSEE, the National Institute for Statistics And Economic Studies, plays an important role in gathering demographic data and constructing basic indices. It frequently relies on INED to design its demographic surveys and to test new studies on sensitive issues (for instance, new types of union, or disability in prisons) before applying them on a larger scale. In turn, INED frequently uses INSEE's network of interviewers, particularly when the survey sample exceeds 5,000 persons.
