Contenu iPOPs laboratory of excellenceThe iPOPs project (individuals, populations, societies) presented by INED in partnership with campus Condorcet, and with the universities of Paris I, Paris Descartes, Bordeaux IV and Strasbourg, has been officially selected, from among 240 submitted proposals, as one of the 100 laboratories of excellence included in the first wave of investments for the future. New research questions![]() The recent transformations affecting developed societies have brought to light new research questions to be addressed, for which the demographic approach, as part of a truly interdisciplinary outlook, is indispensable. The key questions of new family configurations and of ageing, and their interdependencies, are a central theme of the iPOPs project. To understand ongoing change, it is important to link family dynamics (cohabitation and mobilities, lone-parent families, reconstituted families), labour market changes, transformations in intergenerational and gender relationships, population health trends and population ageing (pensions, old-age dependency, end-of-life conditions, etc.). A strategy built around four key componentsThe iPOPs project strategy is built around four key components: research strands, infrastructures, teaching and exploitation of results. The scientific project focuses on two themes: family dynamics and ageing; social, gender and intergenerational inequalities. These two topics will be addressed in a closely coordinated manner, since both concern the nature of the social contract linking individuals, families and the state. The life course events that will be analysed (entry into union, labour market entry, union dissolution, retirement, onset of dependence, etc.) are conditioned by sociodemographic determinants (gender and social group); they have a chronological dimension (intergenerational differences); they are also affected by the sociopolitical context, while at the same time partly shaping this context. To conduct this research, priority will be given to two methodological approaches: life course analysis and international comparative methods. This research will make use of large social cohorts for comparative purposes, notably the longitudinal Generations and Gender Survey (GGS), along with the Elfe cohort for the situation of children from birth, and the family and housing survey for background data. The successful interaction between research and training for research is key to the realization of this project. To achieve this goal, the project will mobilize the potential of French universities and will develop synergies between the different actors, both in France and abroad, via the creation of an excellence fund to provide funding for doctoral and post-doctoral students. Within the framework of the iPOPs project, alongside classic scientific output (publications, conference papers) another priority will be to develop scientific advisory functions, notably relating to public policy, family dynamics, ageing and equality, all of which are central to the major social questions of the contemporary world.
