At the start of this new century, the question of women and equality between the sexes remains a world priority. Twenty years after the last world conference on women, it seems crucial to assess the situation of women across the world.

This atlas, with its many maps and computer graphics, can be used to measure the "paradoxical advances" in the female condition that have been made in such areas as education, employment, the family, fertility, and sexuality, as well as differences between continents and countries.
