What does the term “disability” mean?
It refers to difficulties an individual may have in daily life due to a health disorder or an accident that has affected his/her motor, sensory or cognitive functions.
Technical aids and adapting the person’s environment can help overcome the effects of disability and the dependency it may cause.
By relating disability and life expectancy we can measure the quality of life years gained over time.
Functional limitations are assessed by means of questions on difficulty moving from place to place, bending over, seeing, hearing, etc. Other questions concern discomfort and need for assistance in performing daily activities.
