History and Population This unit studies the history of demography and the development of demographic and economic knowledge from the 17th century up to the present day. It prepares critical editions of past works, including annotations and commentaries to facilitate their interpretation. It develops and manages archives of past statistical surveys (Henry survey, TRA survey) and analyses the data they contain with a view to shedding light on past demographic trends. It also makes use of more unusual sources (osteological collections) and develops new methodological tools for paleodemographers. The lengthening of the human lifespan and changes in the health conditions of past populations are important ongoing research topics (silicosis, plague).
