Ages are plotted on the vertical axis (newborns are at the very bottom, and the oldest people are at the very top). The number of people in each gender group is plotted on the horizontal axis, with men on the left and women on the right. The length of the bars is proportional to the number of men or women in each age group: either in hundreds of thousands of people or as a proportion per 1,000 people of both sexes and all ages.
The “Two stacked pyramids” option allows you to compare France’s age and sex structure at two different dates. Selecting the “Per 1,000 inhabitants” indicator allows you to compare two age structures independently of the total population size, as if it were constant over time (the total areas in red and gray are equal). Selecting the “Number of inhabitants” indicator allows you to compare both the structure and the size simultaneously.
