INED trains students in research through the practice of research. Every year the Institute hosts approximately ten new PhD students from France or elsewhere, selected on the basis of an application and a thesis project that can be integrated into the research conducted in one or another of our research units.
INED does not confer degrees. The PhD students we host therefore come to the Institute after being admitted to a university PhD program either in France or abroad.
Like our own researchers, hosted doctoral students become members of one of our research units, in their case a unit particularly relevant to their dissertation topic.
Hosted PhD students are young research professionals whose time is spent exclusively on writing their thesis. That activity is remunerated by way of a three-year doctoral contract. INED regularly funds these contracts but also hosts students with funding from other institutions. Regardless of the contract funding source, all research at INED must be done in compliance with professional research ethics and follow the profession’s best practices.
Our resident PhD students are usually hosted for three years (the period may be extended if reason is demonstrated). Material working conditions are comfortable and students have access to research support services.
PhD students completing their thesis may also be invited by an INED researcher for a period ranging from a few weeks to a few months up to one year.
The main contact for hosted PhD students is the committee in charge of receiving them, composed of:
- a researcher who heads the committee
- a non-researcher in charge of doctoral student affairs
- uan administrative assistant.
The European Doctoral School of Demography
INED doctoral students are encouraged to take (if they have not already done so) the EDSD international training program created in 2005 by the European Association for Population Studies. EDSD is open to students with a master’s degree regardless of nationality. Students already enrolled in a PhD program may also apply and take the eleven-month program in a pause year.
Successful EDSD applicants are trained in English by the best international demography specialists in a program widely recognized by population research institutes and organizations across the world. The EDSD program is held in a different country every two academic years. INED hosted the School from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2023 to 2026.
