Data protection

Population research often involves processing personal data. INED guarantees transparent, responsible, and ethical management of all personal data collected or used in its research activities. In doing so, we are complying with the applicable data protection laws: the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2026/679 of April 27, 2016; and the French Data Protection Act of January 6, 1978 (amended), relating to information technology, files, and civil liberties.

Protecting research data

This section applies to all personal data collected as part of research projects either conducted or jointly conducted by INED, ranging from direct or indirect (pseudonymized) data collected from respondents, collaborators, or partners, for INED surveys.

Guiding principles

  • Lawfulness, good faith, transparency. Data are processed on a legal basis (formal consent, research conducted in the public interest), and procedures are fully explained to all participants. Personal data may not be processed in any way incompatible with the above-stated end. Data processing in the service of scientific research is considered compatible by default.
  • Data processing is for the sole specific purpose of scientific knowledge.
  • Minimization of data collected. The only data collected are those strictly necessary for attaining clearly defined and stated research objectives.
  • Data accuracy. Personal data must be accurate; they may also be updated depending on the research project. Appropriate measures are taken to rectify any data that are not accurate in relation to the research ends.
  • Data kept for a limited time only. Data are kept for an amount of time proportionate to research project purposes. They may be archived in the interest of historical or scientific knowledge, and then only under strict regulations and management.
  • Security and confidentiality. INED implements appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect data against unauthorized access or disclosure.
  • Accountability. INED strictly abides by the EU’s GDPR regulation and France’s Data Protection Act, ensuring that all of its personal data processing complies with them and that this compliance can be duly demonstrated. To this end, we ensure that data is correctly and suitably documented, while implementing appropriate technical and organizational regulations and procedures and ensuring that research projects unfold within established framing regulations.

Data subjects’ rights

Under the GDPR, individuals whose data are collected and processed for INED research have the right to be informed and to access, correct, restrict, delete, or object to the use of their data, as well as to withdraw their consent. You can exercise these rights by emailing dpd@ined.fr or by writing to:

 Governance and data protection documents

INED’s Data Protection Officer maintains an up-to-date list of research-related data processing activities. Researchers are provided with the documents they need to comply with data protection regulations (guides, consent templates, information notices, and protocols) when preparing their surveys. Data Protection Impact Assessments are also conducted to evaluate and address high risk to individuals’ rights and freedoms.

INED’s Ethics Committee can be consulted for any project.
