From housing to “the private world” in France The role of place of residence, living space, housing in the daily unfolding of life is growing ever stronger (COVID-19 pandemic, climate imbalance, energy crisis). The research in this program will analyze changes in domestic spaces in France and people’s use thereof and document how housing contributes to inequality dynamics. In particular, it will take account of interrelations between the various dimensions of existence (housework and paid work, leisure activities, socializing, care for the disabled or dependent), thereby advancing existing research on “the private world.” Lastly, considerable importance will be attached to connections between the social relations that unfold in and are part of living spaces and housing, especially those involving gender, class, age, and race.
