INED’s success rate in obtaining research grants well above average

INED research studies are funded in part by the Institute’s own budget. But the Institute is also eligible for grants from foundations established for that purpose, such as France’s national research agency (Agence Nationale de la Recherche or ANR), public or industrial organizations, or European Union research programmes. INED has a special department dedicated to assisting its researchers in applying for and obtaining grants. It provides support throughout the research contract process, from monitoring calls for grant proposals and identifying the most relevant ones to negotiating contracts and on to final project management. In 2018, the Institute submitted 8 projects in response to calls for proposals; 6 were selected. Five other projects are currently being prepared for submission or already being evaluated by the relevant agencies or organizations. Additionally, the Institute for the study of longevity, ageing, and the different situations of older persons (Institut Longévité, vieillesses et vieillissements or ILVV) and the Trajectories and Origins 2 survey were awarded ad hoc funding.

As a major demography research actor in Europe, the Institute encourages its researchers to apply for European grants and supports those who apply for European Research Council grants and projects in the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions section of the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. In 2018, INED continued to apply at its usual rate, with a total of 7 projects submitted or in the process of evaluation.

With its 48% success rate in winning national and European research project grants in the last five years, INED is well above the national average for the human and social sciences.
